''The Holy Man is he who takes your soul and will and makes them his''.
The Brothers Karamazov, Fyodor Dostoevsky, 1880.
The famous Russian soul of course is not to be found so easily on a brief visit, but we hope that this tour will bring you closer towards an understanding of the mystery that is Russia. Parts of what you will see and wonder at, are in a church or a monastery, but more than anything, this tour is about the scale of human achievement in Russia, both in the service of God and the Tsar. We want to show you the dazzling multiplicity that is to be seen in these centres of Russian culture.
In Moscow our first look at Orthodox Russia will be the Danilov Monastery where the Patriarch lives, then to Kolomenskoe, an outdoor museum of churches and sacred architecture, finally to the newly rebuilt Christ the Saviour Cathedral. Our visit to the Kremlin will include the churches, a private tour of the Faceted Palace and Terem (which is normally closed to the public) and the Armoury.
Vladimir and Suzdal are the two ancient towns outside of Moscow which we will visit, both of them notable for their kremlins and early churches.
Since its foundation in 1703 by Peter the Great, St Petersburg has been the historic showcase for the Romanov dynasty, and recently the favoured city of President Putin for meetings with visiting Heads of State. Our tour is necessarily a grand one, taking in the Summer Palace of Peter the Great and the palace of his favourite, Menshikov. We will visit Peterhof, on the Gulf of Finland, and the Grand Palace of Oranienbaum, with its Sliding Pavilion and the little known Chinese Pavilion. In Tsarskoe Selo, our visit will include both the Catherine Palace and the almost forgotten Alexander Palace, last home of Nicholas II and his family.
